Cult classic horror game comes to consoles soon

The cult classic existentialist horror game I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream will be available on March 27 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, breaking free from PC exclusivity for the first time since its release 30 years ago.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is a 1995 video game based on Harlan Ellison’s 1967 short tale of the same name. Despite being 30 years old, it is not well recognised. The game and plot follow five separate survivors who represent humanity on a post-apocalyptic planet destroyed by a sentient supercomputer known as AM. The game adaption was co-designed and co-written by the late Ellison, who also provided AM’s voice.

Suppose the fundamental premise and unsettling title did not give it away. In that case, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream deals with some really weighty subjects, like existential dread, the threat of AI, genocide, severe mental illness, suicide, and sexual assault. It is a relatively regular point-and-click adventure game in which you utilise action prompts to lead your character to explore, chat with characters, acquire stuff, and use them. There are additional riddles and a morality system that judges you according to your decisions.

The retro torchbearers at Nightdive Studios are bringing the cult classic game to consoles for the first time, and you can watch the frightening video for the port right above.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream may not be recognised as one of the greatest horror games of all time, but its brief gameplay is worthwhile, if only for the novelty of a 1995 game exploring such challenging issues. And, with the planned console port adding another layer of preservation, now is as good a moment as any to do it.
