This restriction order is not issued lightly; it is considered a last resort. It comes with a 30-day limit but can be renewed up to five times if necessary. The aim is to protect individuals from falling victim to scams while providing a structured approach to intervention.

In a poignant discussion about the growing prevalence of scams, Sun highlighted the vulnerability of specific demographics, particularly the elderly and those seeking companionship. She recounted the heartbreaking story of a 64-year-old woman who fell victim to a deceitful romance scam. This unsuspecting woman was lured into a false sense of love and trust, ultimately parting with a staggering S$400,000, equivalent to HK$2.27 million, in her quest for affection.

Sun expressed deep concern over the inadequacy of existing safeguards against such fraudulent schemes. She revealed alarming statistics that underscored the severity of the issue: self-effected transfers—where victims willingly send money—constituted a shocking 86 percent of all scam reports. Furthermore, these transfers accounted for an overwhelming 94 percent of total financial losses reported from January to September this year.

The financial toll of scams has reached unprecedented heights, with total losses soaring to S$650 million in 2023 alone. The figures paint a grim picture, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced protective measures to shield vulnerable individuals from the clutches of deceitful scammers.
