Recently, the term “frame generation” has become a hot topic among enthusiasts of PC gaming hardware. Whether expressed with enthusiasm or disdain, this concept is gaining traction as both GPUs and games increasingly adopt AI-assisted rendering techniques. A prime example is the upcoming game Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which promises an extensive array of frame generation and upscaling options.

In a recent technology Q&A session, Pierre F, the technology director for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, revealed that the game will include a comprehensive range of frame generation solutions—though it appears DLSS 4 Multi Frame Gen will not be among them. Furthermore, players will have the flexibility to combine different upscaling technologies, creating a diverse non-native rendering experience.

According to the tech director, “DLSS 3.7, FSR 3.1, and XeSS 2 are all compatible for both upscaling and frame generation. Our proprietary Temporal AA solution is also an option. You can mix and match these technologies; for instance, you could choose one for upscaling while selecting another for frame generation.”

It’s worth noting that users with AMD or Intel graphics cards won’t have access to Nvidia’s DLSS for either upscaling or frame generation. However, this mixing capability could be particularly advantageous for gamers with Nvidia’s RTX 20-series and 30-series cards, allowing them to utilize FSR frame generation alongside DLSS upscaling, for example.

AMD graphics cards will support XeSS upscaling in conjunction with FSR frame generation, but only with a version of XeSS that falls short of the quality offered by FSR 3.1. As for Intel GPUs, they are likely to continue utilizing XeSS 2 for frame generation, which is compatible even with Alchemist models.

It’s worth noting that Intel’s XeSS 2 for frame generation is rather uncommon. Just two titles have adopted this technology: F1 24 and Marvel Rivals. Thanks to Ubisoft’s collaboration with Intel, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be the third game to feature it.

Pierre F elaborates: “Through our partnership with Intel, we had early and exclusive access to XeSS 2 prior to its public release, and we collaborated closely with Intel engineers to ensure optimal implementation.” It will be fascinating to observe how Intel’s frame generation performs in comparison to established competitors like FSR and DLSS.

We won’t have to wait long for answers. After an unsatisfactory delay, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled to release on March 20, 2025. This new instalment promises gameplay featuring dual protagonists, catering to both stealth enthusiasts and action lovers—providing ample opportunities for frame generation and upscaling challenges.
