Manhunt 2’s censorship is justified

In the past, Rockstar released more than two games every ten years. I know that is hard to believe, but as someone who experienced that euphoric time, I would attest to its reality in court.

Between Vice City Stories and Bully the previous year and GTA 4 and Midnight Club: Los Angeles the following year, there existed a game similar to Manhunt 2. In fact, the publisher was in charge of no fewer than four adaptations of Los Angeles during an eight-year period, which serves as a colourful illustration of how hectic Rockstar’s release calendar used to get. That includes the vast worlds of GTA 5, San Andreas, LA Noire, and the previously mentioned city racer.

In order to promote the first Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar hired infamous UK publicist Max Clifford, who died in prison after being found guilty of eight indecent attacks on women and young girls. This practice dates back to the company’s early days of soliciting negative publicity. Clifford manipulated the British political establishment by fabricating reports and nudging lawmakers about Grand Theft Auto until the House of Lords debated the game’s age rating.

Grand Theft Auto would likely never have become a worldwide sensation if it were not for such cynical marketing. So you can see where the Manhunt series originated. It had tabloid outrage ingrained in its DNA as a covert idea about televised torture, where players received bonus points for executing death in the most egregiously horrible ways using plastic bags and garrottes. Search’s cult fame only increased the video’s nasty appeal, which was sufficient to secure a sequel even though it did not translate into blockbuster sales.

But by that point, Rockstar was facing serious problems. Following the release of the original game, newspapers accused Manhunt of a teen murder. With the assistance of anti-videogame activist Jack Thompson, calls to restrict the sales of Manhunt 2 surfaced before the game’s release.
