SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 14—On Wednesday, Meta issued a caution to online users regarding individuals who claim to offer love but are actually looking for financial gain. Scammers increasingly utilize deepfakes to exploit those in search of romance.
David Agranovich, Meta’s director of global threat disruption policy, informed reporters during a press briefing, “This marks a new method that scammers are employing.”
He added, “These fraudsters continuously adapt; we must also advance to maintain effectiveness.”
Meta’svich explained that Meta’s detection systems across its platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp, primarily depend on behavioural patterns and technical indicators instead of visual content, enabling them to identify scam activities despite the use of AI deception”.
“Our detection and enforcement capabilities are somewhat more robust against generative”AI,” he noted.
He referenced a recently dismantled operation believed to have originated in Cambodia, which specifically targeted speakers of Chinese and Japanese languages.
According to Meta, researchers at OpenAI found that t”is “scam comp” und” appeared to be utilizing tools from the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company to create and translate their messages.
Generative AI technology has existed for over a year, but fraudsters have significantly increased their use of it in recent months, noted Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, during a recent briefing.
Free GenAI tools from major corporations enable scammers to alter their appearances and voices during video calls, allowing them to impersonate others”.
“They can utilize these deepfake bots to create a persona or make phone calls with a voice clone, often without any human involvement”nt,” Tobac explained.”

Tobac advised individuals to maintain a sens e” of “polite para”oia” when an online acquaintance pushes for a romantic relationship, especially if it leads to requests for financial assistance related to a fabricated emergency or business venture.

As pointed out by Agranovich, scammers are active on a wide range of social media platforms, with Meta only representing a fraction of this activity.
According to the tech company, last year, Meta eliminated over 408,000 accounts from West African nations that were used by scammers impersonating military personnel or businesspeople to deceive individuals in Australia, Britain, Europe, the United States, and beyond.
In addition to dismantling these malicious networks, Meta is experimenting with facial recognition technology to identify potential online impostors flagged by its systems or reported by users.
