What was her vulnerability? It lay in the captivating charm of Taylor Swift’s much-anticipated “The Eras Tour,” which was set to tour Singapore soon.

Roo wasn’t the only one ensnared in this web of deceit.

Numerous others were equally eager to secure their tickets for the show, but they fell prey to the same fraudulent tactics.

Indeed, Singaporeans lose millions every year to online shopping scams, a grim statistic that includes even the younger generation—those who have grown up immersed in the digital world and consider themselves savvy technology users.

Yet, despite being digital natives, Roo and her peers are not immune to the dangers lurking online.

Roo, born in 2003, is well-acquainted with the internet. As a member of Generation Z, she believed she had the skills to navigate the treacherous waters of online scams. Having spent her formative years in the digital landscape, she assumed she could easily outsmart any potential tricksters.

However, she didn’t realise that scammers possess a keen understanding of manipulating the emotions of young people who spend a significant portion of their lives online.

So, the question arises: how can we safeguard ourselves against such schemes?

One fateful day in September 2023, Roo stumbled upon a post in a Telegram group known as “NTU Marketplace.”

A user identified only as “A” was offering two category one tickets to “The Eras Tour” at a price that seemed too good to be true yet negotiable enough to pique Roo’s interest.

Excitedly, she reached out to A.

Roo believed she had struck gold—a deal for two tickets priced at S$750, only slightly above their original cost.

She felt elated at what she thought was a savvy purchase.

Having heard countless tales of others falling victim to scams on online platforms, Roo approached the transaction with caution. To protect herself, she requested a photo of A’s NRIC card as verification.

To her relief, A complied and sent the image without hesitation. Little did she know that this small act would lead her down a path she hadn’t anticipated.

It wasn’t until after Roo had impulsively transferred the funds that a nagging thought began to creep into her mind: What if the NRIC didn’t actually belong to A?

Driven by curiosity, she quickly searched online for the name on the identification card.

To her shock, it was associated with an individual who had a criminal record for rape.

Reflecting on the experience, Roo admitted, “There was a moment when I thought, ‘Yes, I’ve been scammed,’ but a tiny part of me held onto the hope that maybe he had changed for the better, allowing myself to be a bit gullible.”

However, just a few days later, when she concocted a sob story in an attempt to reclaim her money—only to be met with A’s indifferent response that the funds had already been spent—Roo’s innocence vanished.

She described her emotional state as “pretty devastated.”

The university student found herself S$750 poorer and missed out on the chance to see Taylor Swift perform in March 2024.

Yet, amid her loss, she felt a sense of relief that it hadn’t been a more significant sum. “I was genuinely thankful that I wasn’t one of those unfortunate souls who flew in and discovered their tickets were counterfeit. That would have been absolutely heartbreaking,” she reflected.

A Growing Problem in Singapore

The issue of scamming has become alarmingly prevalent in Singapore. Between January and June 2024, Singaporeans lost a staggering S$385.6 million to fraudsters, marking an increase of nearly 25% compared to the same timeframe in 2023.

Among the 26,587 reported scams, e-commerce frauds—like the one Roo experienced—emerged as the most frequent type, resulting in at least S$8.6 million in losses. Concert tickets topped the list of items involved in these scams, with at least 1,113 incidents occurring on platforms like Telegram.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Aileen Yap, who spoke to The Straits Times in March 2024, around 960 individuals fell victim to scams while trying to purchase tickets for Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated tour.

From January 1 to March 12, 2024, over S$538,000 was reported lost in connection with scams tied to the billionaire pop star’s concert series. The majority of those deceived were women under the age of 30.
