4A Games celebrates Metro 2033’s 15th anniversary

This week, in a video commemorating the game’s 15th anniversary, 4A Games creative director Yevhen “Lin” Fedorets included that sincere remark along with additional words of appreciation from the Metro 2033 crew.

Co-founder and creative director of 4A Games Andriy “Prof” Prokhorov also raised a glass to the supporters, adding, “I want to raise this glass to our followers, to our community.” Metro would not have developed into what it is today without your help and encouragement. Spartans, thank you.”

The 4A Games team’s heartfelt words of gratitude were followed by a retrospective of some of the Metro series’ greatest moments over the years and a teaser for what is to come.

Metro 2033, which debuted on March 16, 2010, marked the beginning of a popular series of action-packed first-person shooter games that follow nuclear war survivors as they battle for their lives in the metro tunnels beneath Moscow. For its dev team located in Ukraine, Metro 2033’s gripping, emotional story has grown even more relevant in the ten and a half-years since its release. The continuing situation in Ukraine is influencing the franchise’s future, as 4A Games revealed in a blog post commemorating the games’ anniversary:

“A full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 altered our plans for the next Metro game’s plot. The ideas that were previously there in Metro grew increasingly evident and significant as we drew on the lived experience of many of our developers in Ukraine, where art became life.

“You can be sure these themes will continue owing to our ongoing partnership with series creator, author, and activist Dmitry Glukhovsky,” 4A Games continued. “Metro has always been a hard-hitting, political, anti-war, and frequently emotional plot.”

The circumstances surrounding the 4A Games in Ukraine are unclear. 4A Ukraine, which we found out at the time had been a completely different business from 4A Malta since the studio’s establishment in 2014, rebranded itself as Reburn and revealed La Quimera, its upcoming game, in February. However, 4A stated in a February studio update that after Metro Exodus and its DLC were released, it established a second studio in Kyiv called 4A Games Limited, which hired about 50 people. Meanwhile, 4A Ukraine proceeded with La Quimera and later changed its name, meaning that 4A Games is still active in Ukraine.

4A Games is still working diligently on the upcoming Metro game. 4A Games obviously has something in the works, even though the 15th-anniversary blog post and video do not reveal much (at least not a release date). The studio ended the blog post by generating some anticipation for what is to come:
